December 2006 Hikes

 

Volunteers are welcome and encouraged to join our work parties which are held most Thursdays. Call Ken Bieger, 631-283-5432 to join in.

Sat., Dec.2 - Red Creek Ramble. 10AM-Noon. Meet at the parking lot of Red Creek Park in Hampton Bays. Moderate paced 4-5 mile hike with some hills; views of Penny Pond. Claude Debeaumon, 631-728-8667.
Directions: Take Sunrise Highway to exit 65N (route 24) towards Riverhead. Travel north on C.R. 24 a couple hundred yards. You will see several signs before you bear right onto the turn lane for Old Riverhead Road West. There is not a Southampton Town Park sign here; the sign to look for is “Town of Southampton Jackson Ave. Offices,” and “Town Police.” Turn right onto Old Riverhead Road, pass the entrance to Southampton Town Police, and make the next left into the park.

Sun., Dec. 3 - Barcelona Neck. 10AM-Noon. Meet at the Sag Harbor Golf Club parking lot on Barcelona Point Road, Sag Harbor. Moderate paced 4 mile hike. Magnificent woods and water views and perhaps an inspirational poem or two. Joe Lane, 631-725-3943.
Directions: Take Montauk Highway east to Wainscott and make a left (north) onto Stephen Hands Path. Proceed for 1.3 miles to State Route 114, turn left and travel 2.8 miles north. A short distance past Swamp Road, two signs mark the entrance off of Route 114.  One sign says “Sag Harbor Golf Course” the other sign indicates that you are entering the “Linda Gronland Memorial Nature Preserve at Barcelona Neck”. 0.8-miles after making the turn from Route 114 onto Barcelona Neck Road pass the golf course clubhouse and turn right into the parking lot.  The clubhouse has rest-room facilities and there are refreshments sold here.

Thurs., Dec. 7 - S.T.P.S. Monthly Membership Meeting. 7PM-9PM. Meet in the lower level conference room of Southampton Town Hall. All are welcome and encouraged to come. For more information call Glorian Berk, 631-283-2638.
Directions: Turn RIGHT onto N SEA RD / CR-38. Continue to follow CR-38 for 0.8 miles. Turn LEFT onto Hampton Rd. travel 0.2 miles and you will see Southampton Town Hall on the right side of the road. End at 116 Hampton Rd.  If you enter from the front you can take the down stairway to your left.

Sat., Dec. 9 - Whiskey Hill Wandering. 10AM-11:30AM. Brisk 2 mile hike with ocean views and an enormous glacial erratic. Dai Dayton, 631-537-0660.
Directions: Driving from Montauk Highway in Water Mill
look for Scuttle Hole Road. There is a Hess Gas Station (with restroom facilities and a mini-mart) on the north side of Highway at the corner of Scuttle Hole Road and Montauk Highway. Turn left onto Scuttle Hole Road. Head north on Scuttle Hole Road for 2.5 miles, then turn left onto Lopers Path.  Stay on Lopers Path for .5 mile, then turn right onto Mill Path and follow it to the cull de sac (.3 mile). 

Sat., Dec. 9 - Narrow Lane Clean Up.   8AM-9AM. Help clean up our adopted road.  Meet at Narrow Lane and Norris Lane in Sagaponack.  Bring gloves.  Dai Dayton, 631-537-0660.
Directions: When traveling north from Montauk Highway on Bridgehampton Sag Harbor Turnpike Narrow Lane is the second right.  Follow Narrow Lane to Norris Lane which is the first right on Narrow.

Sat., Dec. 9 - Monthly Work Party. Call Ken Kindler for time and place. 631-563-4354.

Sun., Dec. 10 - Mulvihill Preserves. 10AM-Noon. Meet on Bridge Hill Lane. A moderately brisk 4 mile hike with streams, ponds, glacial erratics and the Great Swamp. Dianne Rulnick, 631-726-5903.
Directions:
Traveling east through Water Mill on Montauk Highway, look for Scuttle Hole Road. There is a Hess Gas Station (with restroom facilities and a mini-mart) at the corner on the north side of Montauk Highway. Scuttle Hole Road is just after that. Turn left onto Scuttle Hole Road. Travel three miles until you see Brick Kiln Road; make a left onto it. Travel 0.4-miles north on Brick Kiln Road to park on the shoulder of Bridge Hill Lane.  The entrance to the trail is on the other side of Brick Kiln Road.

Thurs., December 14 – S.T.P.S. Annual Membership Meeting.  7PM-9PM.  Meet in the lower level meeting room of Town Hall to elect officers and committee chairs for 2007 and vote on the adoption of amended By Laws.  All are welcome and encouraged to attend.  For more information call Glorian Berk, 631-283-2638.
Directions: Turn RIGHT onto N SEA RD / CR-38. Continue to follow CR-38 for 0.8 miles. Turn LEFT onto Hampton Rd. travel 0.2 miles and you will see Southampton Town Hall on the right side of the road. End at 116 Hampton Rd. 

Sat., Dec. 16 - Elliston Park. 10AM-Noon. Great variety in this 4 mile hike. Moderate pace. Views of Big Fresh Pond, Scallop Pond and Wolf Swamp. Howard Reisman, 631-283-5376.
Directions: follow County Road 39, then head north 2 miles on North Sea Road; look for the Emma Rose Elliston Park sign and turn left onto Millstone Brook Road.  Travel 0.3 miles and you will find the park on your left.

Sat., Dec.16 - Equestrian Event. 1PM.  Ride the southern portion of the beautiful Bay to Ocean Trail through Sagaponack with dramatic farm field and ocean views.  BYO horse.  Limit 6 riders. Dai Dayton, 631-537-0660.


Sun., Dec. 17 - Trout Pond Surprise. 10AM-11:30AM. Explore historic Trout Pond and learn its secrets. Very brisk paced 3 miles Meet at the Trout Pond Parking Lot.  Chip Dineen, 646-221-8225.
Directions:
Trout Pond parking lot on Noyac Road across from Mill Road, in Noyac, east of the Morton National Wildlife preserve, on the south side of the road.  The paved parking area is east of Millstone Road and just west of Ruggs Path

Sat., Dec. 23 - Barrel Hill. 10AM-11:30AM. Meet on Edge of Woods Road, Southampton. Hike a loop trail on the last glacial moraine before Bridgehampton’s plains.  Moderate pace, some hills. Ken Bieger, 631-283-5432.
Directions: traveling on CR 39 (Montauk Highway) east, turn left onto North Sea Road.  Due to the recent efforts to accelerate traffic flow through the "bottleneck", this is the first left turn you can make off of CR 39 on weekday mornings prior to 9:00 a.m.  Almost immediately the road splits; bear right onto Majors Path.  After approximately 1 mile, turn right onto Edge of Woods Road.  Follow this road .9 miles; park just before you reach where the power lines cross Edge of Woods Road. There is no formal parking, but there are several wide places on the road shoulders that will accommodate some cars.  The trail is on the north side of the road. There are private driveways on either side of the path.  Look for the Southampton Trail sign and the plastic black owls marking the access trail.

Sun., Dec. 24 - Long Pond Greenbelt. 10AM-12:30PM.  Score some points with Santa and your physical fitness guru. Hike the beautiful Greenbelt. 5 miles at a moderate pace. Meet at Mashashimuet Park in Sag Harbor. Bob Wolfram, 631-725-4237.
Directions:  The Park entrance is in Sag Harbor, just south of the Bridgehampton Sag Harbor Turnpike intersection with Jermain Avenue.  Meet in the parking lot facing the ball fields.

Sat., Dec. 30 - Surf & Turf Tour. 12PM-2PM. Hike the hills of the moraine then wander the shore of Noyac Bay, with a walk through Pine Neck between the two. Meet at the parking lot next to the Waterside Condos in Noyac. 4-5 miles, moderate pace. Capt. Bill, 631-725-2888.
Directions: Follow Noyac Road east past Morton NWP and Trout Pond Park.  Bear left onto Long Beach Road.  Look for the Waterside Condos in Noyac, on the north side of the road just west of the Town Beach.

Sun., Dec. 31 - Laurel Valley. 10AM-Noon. Meet at the kiosk on Deerfield Road in Noyac (across from Deerwood Path). Moderately brisk 3-4 mile hike through this beautiful County preserve. Dianne Rulnick, 631-726-5903.
Directions:  From County Road 39, head east past Southampton College, bear left onto North Sea Road.  Follow the sign for Route 52, Sag Harbor and North Sea.  After traveling 2.4 miles bear right onto Noyac Road (Route 38).  Travel 4.6 miles to Deerfield Road where you will make a very sharp right turn.  You will find the trailhead approximately 1 mile south on the left side of the road.  

Mon., Jan. 1 - Happy New Year Hike. 7AM-9AM. the dawn in the sky greets the day in—MONTAUK! Watch the sun rise from the ocean; then take a 4 mile hike in Camp Hero. Meet at Montauk State Park parking lot. Tony Garro 631-725-5861.
Directions: Follow Montauk Highway to the end; continue on loop around to parking area.
