January 2005 Hikes

 

Sat.,Jan.1 – Great New York Dawn at Montauk. 7AM-9AM. 

Meet at Montauk Point Concession Stand for a beautiful sunrise followed by a moderately paced hike along the bluffs.

Sun.,Jan.2 – Long Pond Greenbelt North Circuit. 10AM-Noon.

Meet at Mashashimuet Park in Sag Harbor. Moderately paced hike with spectacular views of Long Pond, Little Long Pond, and Crooked Pond. Call leader if weather is inclement.

Sat.,Jan.8 - Long Pond Greenbelt South Circuit. 9AM-Noon.

Meet at the South Fork Natural History Society (SOFO) Museum parking lot on Bridgehampton Turnpike 200 yards north of the RR tracks. Fast-paced hike through grasslands & oak forest with views of Crooked Pond, Long Pond  & Deer Drink.

Sat.Jan.8 – Monthly Trail Work Outing.

Every second Saturday, we will have a members’ trail work outing.  Call several days in advance and Ken will describe the work and give directions for where we will meet.

Sun.,Jan.9 – Tuckahoe Hill Traverse. 10AM-Noon. 
Meet at the Tuckahoe School on Sebonac Road in Southampton.
During the weekend, you can park in the lot on the corner of North Magee Street and Sebonac Road.  Spectacular view, over Cow Neck, of the Peconic Bay and Robins Island. Directions from the west: Montauk Hwy. to light at N. Magee St. (east of Southampton College), Travel north ¼ mile to parking lot on corner of N. Magee and Sebonac Rd. at Tuckahoe School in Southampton.

Sat.,Jan.15 – Winter is Wonderful/ Rediscover Jessups Neck. 10AM-Noon.   

Meet at Elizabeth Morton Wildlife Preserve on Noyak Road west of Trout Pond.

Moderate pace with some beach walking.

Sun.,Jan.16 – Paumanok Path North. 10AM-Noon.

Meet at the Southampton Youth Center on Majors Path. Discover at new section of the Paumanok Path.  Moderate pace.

Directions: Traveling east on Montauk Highway (Route 27), turn left onto North Sea Road and take the first right fork onto Majors Path. Take Majors Path for approximately two miles, ¼ mile passed intersection with Straight Path, on the left side of the road.

Thurs.,Jan.20 – Mulvihill Preserve Walk in Silence. 10AM-Noon. 

Meet at the Gingerbread Bake Shop on the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike. See the bones of the woods dressed in snow. Listen and marvel at the secrets of this beautiful preserve. Bring your favorite person(s). Easy pace.

Sat., Jan. 22- Narrow Lane Cleanup. 8AM-9AM.

Help clean up the litter from our adopted road. Meet on Narrow Lane, and east corner of Bridgehampton Turnpike. Bring gloves.

Sun.,Jan.23- Mashomack Preserve Ramble. 10AM-2PM.

Meet at the North Haven/Shelter Island Ferry. Moderately brisk 13-mile hike through meadows, woods, and beaches. Spectacular views of north and south forks. Bring lunch and plenty of water, $5.00/person for Ferry and Preserve Donation.

Sat.,Jan.29- Barcelona Neck Excursion.  10AM-12:30PM.

Meet at Sag Harbor Golf Club parking lot on Barcelona Point Road off of Route 114, Sag Harbor. Moderately brisk 4-5 mile hike with views of Sag Harbor Bay, Northwest Creek and Harbor, Cedar Point Park, and Mashomack Preserve.

Sun.,Jan.30- Elliston Park Trek. 10AM-Noon.

Meet at the Park entrance on Millstone Brook Road in Southampton Moderately-paced hike with views of Wolf Swamp and Big Fresh Pond.
