March 2002 Hikes

 

Sat.,March 2-Northwest Path Hike. 10AM-12:30PM. Meet at intersection of Merchants Path and Wainscott Harbor Road in Bridgehampton. Brisk 5-6 mile hike on a new trail loop.

Sun., March 3-Paumanok Path Circuit. 10AM-3PM.  Meet at The Nature Conservancy’s Big Woods parking area on Millstone Brook Road, Southampton. Energetic 12-mile (not for beginner hikers!) hike through beech/oak forests with fantastic views of marshes, Sebonac Creek, Big Fresh Pond, Peconic Bay and the North Fork.  Bring lunch and plenty of water.
* This is the #8 of a series of 10 hikes (The Cupid Series – guaranteed to make you fall in love with the Paumanok Path) highlighting the west to east travels on the Paumanok Path as it crosses Southampton Town.  Other hikes in this series are being offered by Hiking Long Island.  See schedule at www.hike-li.com. STPS will continue to travel through the Paumanok Path eastward bound in hikes during the months ahead.  Watch for details!

Sat.,March 9-Hubbard Creek/Sears Bellows Meander. 10AM-Noon. Meet on Red Creek Road in Hampton Bays, 100 yards from Route 24.  Moderately paced hike on our newest trail with numerous water views, including a waterfall and several ponds. See Black Duck Lodge.

Sun.,March 10- Poxabogue County Park Trek. 9AM-11AM.  Meet at Park Entrance on Old Farm Road, Bridgehampton. Fast-paced hike with views of coastal plain ponds and the Truman Capote Stone.

Sat.,March 16-Narrow Lane Cleanup and Optional Hike. 8AM-9AM (cleanup) 9AM-10AM (Hike). Meet on Narrow Lane and the eastern side of Bridgehampton Turnpike. Help us cleanup the litter from our adopted road and than hike Vineyard Woods to Vineyard Fields. Bring gloves.

Sun.,March 17-St. Patricks Day Ramble in the Long Pond Greenbelt. 10AM- Noon. Meet at Mashashimuet Park in Sag Harbor. Moderately paced hike. Spectacular winter views of the East End’s best pond system. Dress warmly.

Sat.,March 23-Red Creek Park Traverse. 10AM-Noon. Meet at the parking lot on Jackson Avenue, Hampton Bays.  Brisk hike to the bay. See Black Duck Lodge and Penny Pond.

Sun.,March 24-Cedar Point Park Excursion. 10AM-Noon. Meet at Park entrance check-in station on Cedar Point Road off Alewive Brook Road, East Hampton. Moderately paced hike to scenic bluffs with views of Gardener’s bay, Gardiner’s Island, Plum Island, Connecticut and beyond.

Sat.,March 30 – Elliston Park Ramble.10AM-Noon. Meet at the entrance on Millstone Brook Road, Southampton for an easy 3-5 mile hike with views of Wolf Swamp, Scallop Pond, and Big Fresh Pond. Leader: Howard Reisman, 631-283-5376.


Sun.,March 31-Laurel Valley Trek. 10AM-11:30PM. Meet at the kiosk on Deerfield Road, Noyac across from Deerwood Path (North Side Hills). Moderately hilly terrain. Brisk hike through wooded knolls & laurel-filled ravines. Dress warmly.
