December 2001 Hikes

 

 

Sat. Dec. 1 – Paumanok Path. 2PM-4PM.

Meet at intersection of Brick Kiln Road and Stony Hill Road, Sag Harbor. Brisk hike through Oak Forest and glacial erratics to a humongous sand mine.

Directions:  Follow Noyack Road into Sag Harbor to where the road splits.  Don’t take Long Beach Road, head south on Noyack Road to where it splits again at Stony Hill Road.  Proceed to the small grassy island where Stony Hill and Brick Kiln roads meet.

Sun. Dec.2 – Cedar Point Park. 10AM-Noon.

Meet at Park entrance check-in station on Cedar Point Road off Alewive Brook Road, East Hampton. Hike the scenic bluffs with views of Gardener’s bay, Gardiner’s Island, Plum Island, Connecticut and beyond.

Directions: On Montauk Highway heading east you will see the Wainscott town sign. Pass Daniels Hole Road (this is the road for the East Hampton Airport.) Take the next left turn (North) Stephen Hands Path. Bear left onto Old Northwest Road. Stay on Old NW RD until you reach Northwest Road. Make a right onto Northwest Road; take it to the end, then make a left onto Alewive Brook Road. Make a quick right onto Cedar Point Road. You are now in the Park. Use the Parking lot by the office.

You can walk a self-guided nature trail. Guidebooks are available at the Park Office.

Sat. Dec.8 – Poxabogue to Sagg Swamp Ramble. 10AM-Noon.

Meet at the entrance to Poxabogue County Park on Old Farm Road in Bridgehampton.  Easy 6-7 mile hike to The Nature Conservancy’s beautiful Sagg Swamp Preserve.

Directions:  From the west, take Montauk Hwy. through Bridgehampton and over Bridgehampton Sag Harbor Tpk. Pass Poxabogue Golf Course and make a left turn at the light by Sagg Road.  Take first left on Hildreth Lane and bends to the right onto Old Farm Road.  Before the LIRR underpass on your left side, see Suffolk County Parks Sign.

Sun. Dec. 9 – Northwest Path Traverse. 10AM-Noon.

Meet on Sagg Road across from Widow Gavitts Road, Sag Harbor. Fast hike in the Bridgehampton Hills on 3-4 miles of the Paumanok Path.

Directions:  Since the Sagg Road bridge burned, it isn’t easy to get here.  Anyone know a better way than following Madison Street down from Sag Harbor?

Sat. Dec. 15 – Long Pond Greenbelt Hike. 10AM-Noon.

Meet at the parking lot in Mashashimuet Park, Sag Harbor. Enjoy a brisk hike along an abandoned railroad spur with views of Long and Little Long Ponds, Crooked Pond, and Deer Drink.

Directions:  Follow Bridgehampton Sag Harbor Turnpike north to it’s end and take a hard right into the park entrance.

Sun. Dec. 16 – Sears Bellows Ramble. 10AM-Noon.

Meet at the Sears Bellows Park Entrance on Bellows Pond Road. Moderate hike through oak-pine forest. See Bellows, House, Division, and Sears Ponds.

Directions:  Bellows Pond Road south from CR 24

Sat. Dec. 22 – Laurel Valley Traverse. 10AM-Noon.

Meet at the kiosk located on Deerfield Road in Noyac across from Deerwood Path (North Side Hills). Brisk hike through wooded knolls & laurel-filled ravines. Hilly terrain.

Directions: Heading east on Noyack Road before the Morton National Wildlife Refuge make a hairpin right-turn on Deerfield Road, travel a half mile south, left side of road.  It is about 5 miles north of where Deerfield Road intersects Montauk Highway.

Additional information: You can also enter this park from the southern most point of Wildwood Road on the south side of Noyac Road.  You will find this entrance just east of the Morton National Wildlife Refuge, which is on the north side of Noyack Road.


Sun. Dec. 23 – Hubbard Creek County Park Hike. 10AM-Noon.

Meet on Red Creek Road in Hampton Bays, 100 yards from Route 24.  Hike our newest trail with numerous water views, including a waterfall and several ponds. See Black Duck Lodge.  Bring cameras and binoculars.  This is a walk with many beautiful views.

Directions:  Heading east on CR 24 pass public phone & parking area, turn left onto Red Creek Road at Hubbard Creek Park sign.

Sat., Dec. 29 – Elliston Park Ramble. 10AM-Noon.

Meet at the entrance on Millstone Brook Road, Southampton for an easy 3-5 mile hike with views of Wolf Swamp, Scallop Pond, and Big Fresh Pond.

Directions: Follow North Magee Street north from CR 39, at five corners make a right onto Millstone Brook Road.  The park is on your right.

Sun. Dec. 30 – Full Moon Hike to Gardiner’s Bay. 6:30PM-8PM.

Meet on Swamp Road approximately ½ mile east of Route 114, Sag Harbor. Bring a flashlight and dress warmly.

Directions:  Take Stephen Hands Path north from Montauk Highway.  A left onto Buckskill, which then turns into CR 114.  A couple of miles, and you will make a right onto Swamp Road.
