March 2007 Hikes
To find the Greenbelt Office in Blydenburgh Park: from Route 25-25A in Smithtown, go south on Brooksite Dr.; at next light (New Mill Rd.), turn right to park entrance at end of road. From Route 347, find Brooksite Dr. between the 347-454 junction and Rt. 111; head north on Brooksite to New Mill Rd.; go left to the park. Follow the paved path at the west end of the lot to the Blydenburgh-Weld House.
IMPORTANT:
The first line of each
listing includes TIME, DISTANCE, PACE, and TERRAIN, in that
order. "Info" means no reservation is necessary; call only if you need more
information. "CALL" means you must call the leader to reserve a space on the
hike.

Certain risks are inherent in any hike or other L.I. Greenbelt Trail Conference, Inc. (the Greenbelt) activity. Each Greenbelt member, guest, or non-member participant agrees to accept personal responsibility for his or her safety and the safety of minors accompanying such persons. The Greenbelt cannot ensure the safety of any participant on hikes or activities. In participating in Greenbelt activities, each such person agrees to hold harmless and free from blame the activity leaders and the Greenbelt, its officers, directors, and members, for any accident, injury, or illness which might be sustained from participating in hikes or other Greenbelt activities.

Learn the history of the
1821 Blydenburgh-Weld House and the nearby mill complex, and enjoy the paths
along beautiful Stump Pond; tours run every Saturday; meet at the Greenbelt
Office (directions at top of schedule).
Fri. Mar. 2 MOONLIGHT HIKE:
8:00 PM - 4 miles - moderate flat Info: Bill R., 631-859-1794.
Meet at the Trails Information Center, 1/4 mile
north of L.I.E. Exit 70, for an evening walk; bring water, small flashlight;
rain may cancel, but clouds dont.
Sat. Mar. 3 STUMP POND CIRCULAR:
9:00 AM 5.8 miles moderate varied Info: Charlotte, 631-929-1035.
Circumnavigate the pond in the
middle of Blydenburgh Park; not intended for beginners; hiking boots a must;
rain or heavy snow cancels; bring snack and water; meet at our Office (see
directions at top of schedule).
Sun. Mar. 4 Sun. Mar. 4 SUNKEN MEADOW RAMBLE:
Noon 4.5 miles moderate some hills - Info: Tom or Sherri, 631-567-9484.
Walk the north end of our L.I.
Trail, with fine views of the Nissequogue River; foul weather cancels; bring
water; meet at Smithtown Landing Golf Course (from jct. NY 25-25A-111 in
Smithtown, go west short distance to Landing Ave.; take Landing north 2 miles or
so; golf course is on right; follow park road down to river). E:

Fri. Mar. 9 - TRAILS CENTER SPECIAL:

Start the weekend early with a walk from the
Trails Information Center in Manorville (1/4 mile north of L.I.E. Exit 70) to
Wading River-Manor Rd. and back; bring water; rain cancels.
Sat. Mar. 10 No guided
walk scheduled for today.
Visit the Blydenburgh-Weld House and take a walk
around Stump Pond, or take a friend on your favorite section of the Greenbelt
Trail system.

Sun. Mar. 11 COLD SPRING HARBOR HILL HOP:

Cold Spring Harbor to NY 25 and back again; bring snack and liquid; rain
cancels; meet at trailhead in State Park, NY 25A, east of NY 108 and next to
C.S.H. Library.
Sat. Mar. 17 WEAR GREEN HIKE:

Maybe a leprechaun will show
up or well find a pot of gold; wear green and walk the Stump Pond Loop in

Spring is almost here! Lets welcome the season with a hike at one of Long Island's jewels with open meadows, lawns, marshy refuge and its conifer collection of fir, spruce, pine, cypress, hemlock from all parts of the world; bring water, snack and a smile; opt to stay for lunch at the Cafι; rain cancels; joint with NHOC; take NY 27 to Connetquot Avenue, go south to NY 27A, east to Arboretum on your right.

VERNAL EQUINOX WALK:

Walt Whitman in West Hills Park, including the highest spot on Long Island;

from L.I.E. Exit 49 or No. St. Pky.
Exit 40, go north on NY 110; a mile north of pky., turn left at sign for Whitman
Birthplace Hist. Site; turn left onto West Hills Rd., left again at stop sign at
Reservoir Rd.; continue to end of Reservoir Rd.
Sat. Mar. 24 BROOKHAVEN TRAIL WALK:
9:30 AM 6.8 miles moderate

A fast-paced walk through beautiful pine barrens; diverse scenery; meet at s.w.
corner of Shoreham-Wading River HS parking lot, NY 25A, Ό mile east of Wm. Floyd
Pky.; bring lunch & liquid; heavy rain cancels.
Sat. Mar. 24 BAYARD CUTTING WALK:
10:00 AM 3-4 miles moderate flat Info: Charlotte, 631-929-1035.
Beginners are welcome on this
exploration of the Bayard Cutting Arboretum, on the banks of the Connetquot
River; rain or heavy snow cancels; meet at Great River LIRR station (from NY 27,
go south on Connetquot Avenue to station; park on south side).
Sat. Mar. 24 WEST END WINTER WALK:

Meet at Jones Beachs West End
parking lot for an anti-cabin fever beach walk; bring water; bad weather

Meet at Smithtown Landing Golf
Course for a hike to Sunken Meadow State Park and back on the L.I. Trail; bring
snack and liquid; rain cancels; from NY 25/25A/111 in Smithtown, go west on Main
St. to Landing Avenue (picture frame store on corner), then north on Landing
Avenue to G.C.; follow park road to parking lot, and meet at river side of lot.
Tues. Mar. 27 MASSAPEQUA STRETCH:

Walk the Nassau-Suffolk Trail from Boundary Avenue to Merrick Road, mostly through Massapequa Preserve; bring water; foul weather cancels; park on Ocean Avenue, just north of Merrick Rd., in Massapequa. E: 2caseys@optonline.net.
