June 2007 Hikes

To find the Greenbelt Office in Blydenburgh Park: from Route 25-25A in Smithtown, go south on Brooksite Dr.; at next light (New Mill Rd.), turn right to park entrance at end of road. From Route 347, find Brooksite Dr. between the 347-454 junction and Rt. 111; head north on Brooksite to New Mill Rd.; go left to the park. Follow the paved path at the west end of the lot to the Blydenburgh-Weld House.

 

IMPORTANT:

The first line of each listing includes TIME, DISTANCE, PACE, and TERRAIN, in that
order. "Info" means no reservation is necessary; call only if you need more information. "CALL" means you must call the leader to reserve a space on the hike.

Certain risks are inherent in any hike or other L.I. Greenbelt Trail Conference, Inc. (the “Greenbelt”) activity. Each Greenbelt member, guest, or non-member participant agrees to accept personal responsibility for his or her safety and the safety of minors accompanying such persons. The Greenbelt cannot ensure the safety of any participant on hikes or activities. In participating in Greenbelt activities, each such person agrees to hold harmless and free from blame the activity leaders and the Greenbelt, its officers, directors, and members, for any accident, injury, or illness which might be sustained from participating in hikes or other Greenbelt activities.

Saturdays – BLYDENBURGH HOUSE AND HISTORIC TOUR EVERY SATURDAY:

Learn the history of the 1821 Blydenburgh-Weld House and the nearby mill complex, and enjoy the paths along beautiful Stump Pond; tours run every Saturday; meet at the Greenbelt Office (directions at top of schedule).
 

Fri. June 1 – TRAILS CENTER SPECIAL:

            9:00 AM – 4 miles – easy to moderate – flat – Info: Vinny, 631-209-0030.

Start the weekend early with a walk from the Trails Information Center in Manorville (1/4 mile north of L.I.E. Exit 70) to Wading River-Manor Rd. and back; bring water; rain cancels.
 

Sat. June 2 – NATIONAL TRAILS DAY: WELCOME BACK TO EDGEWOOD:

10:00 AM-2:00 PM at the Edgewood Preserve in Deer Park/Dix Hills. 

The Friends of the Edgewood Preserve is hosting “Welcome Back to Edgewood—A Celebration of Nature and Community” in cooperation with the D.E.C. as a celebration of the work they’ve done to improve conditions at the Preserve; a family/community event; a bird and nature walk, mountain bike demonstration and short ride, games for kids, exhibits and tables with information; D.E.C. is providing free bottled water; park at Preserve entrance on northbound side of Commack Road, north of LIRR Main Line tracks and south of L.I.E.
 

Sat. June 2 – NATIONAL TRAILS DAY HELP HIKE:

10:00 AM – 2 hours – Info: Office, 631-360-0753. E: www.ligreenbelt.org.

If you’re an East Ender, you can help us improve El’s Wampmissick Trail at the Trails Information Center, 1/4 mile north of L.I.E. Exit 70; bring gloves and water; refreshments and programs after.
 

Sat. June 2 – STUMP POND SINGLES HIKE:

9:00 AM – 5.7 miles – moderate – varied – Info: Charlotte 631-929-1035.

BYOB (bring your own breakfast), and meet at the parking lot at our Office in Blydenburgh Park (see directions at top of schedule); hike the Stump Pond Loop; not recommended for beginners; rain cancels.

Sat. June 2 – SARNOFF SPECIAL:

10:00 AM – 8-10 miles – easy to moderate – varied – Info: John: 631-574-8844.

Explore the D.E.C.’s Sarnoff Preserve and see classic pine barrens on this regular series of hikes on the first and third Saturday of each month; distance will be up to the group; meet at the D.E.C. parking lot on C.R. 104, 2.5 miles south of the Riverhead traffic circle, or north from NY 27 Exits 63 or 64.
 

Mon. June 4 – NORMAN LEVY PRESERVE WALK:

            10:00 AM – 2 miles – easy – slightly hilly – Info: Joe, 516-334-0076.

Great views from atop the hill in this Nassau County Preserve in Merrick; bring water; heavy rain cancels; take Meadowbrook Parkway to Exit 9E (Merrick Road); go east about Ό mile and follow signs to Town of Hempstead Department of Sanitation entrance; park is inside sanitation facility.
 

Sat. June 9 – QUOGUE REFUGE WALK:

            10:00 AM – 3 miles – easy, interpretive – flat - Info: Tom or Sherri, 631-567-9484.

From wetlands through lowland pines to dwarf pines, this gem of a refuge has a little bit of everything you’ll find in the pine barrens; rain or snow cancels; from NY 27 Exit 63, go south on C.R. 31 to Montauk Hwy., then left to a left fork onto South Country Rd.; continue to the end of the road, and turn left across the LIRR to the refuge; park in open area across street from refuge. Sun. June 10 – PINE BARRENS IN SPRING:

9:30 AM – 7 miles – moderate to fast – mostly flat – Info: Andy, 631-696-8089.

See the first signs of spring on this western pine barrens hike; very diverse scenery including Grassy, Sandy and Jones Ponds; bring lunch and liquid; heavy rain cancels; meet at the Trails Information Center, 1/4 mile north of L.I.E. Exit 70.
 

Sun. June 10 – WILDWOOD SINGLES HIKE:

10:30 AM – 4 miles – moderate – varied – Info: Charlotte 631-929-1035.
Weather permitting: bring a bag lunch for on the beach following hike; not recommended for beginners; meet at Wildwood State Park, Wading River, (possible parking fee, or free with Empire State Passport); from L.I.E. Exit 68, take William Floyd Pky. north to NY 25A, go east  to left fork onto Sound Ave., turn left onto Hulse Landing Rd., continue to park; rain cancels.
 

Sun. June 10 – WANTAGH NATURE TRAIL WALK:

            1:00 PM – 3-4 miles – easy – flat – Info: Rich or Lisa, 516-826-8339.

Grab a camera and explore the beautiful woodlands, streams, lakes and wetlands along our newest Greenbelt Trail; children 10 and under welcome; rain cancels; meet at Forest Lake School (Wantagh Pky. Exit W5W (NY 27), west to first light, north on Old Mill Rd. about Ύ mile to school.
 

Wed. June 13 – SMITHTOWN SPECIAL:

            9:30 – 4 miles – easy – rolling – Info: Tom or Sherri, 631-567-9484.

Walk from Summerset Drive in Smithtown through Caleb Smith St. Pk. Preserve and into Blydenburgh Park; historic and diverse; rain cancels; bring snack and liquid; meet at our Office (directions at top of schedule). E: 2caseys@optonline.net
 

Sat. June 16 - CONNETQUOT SPECIAL:

9:00 AM – 6 miles – moderate – flat – Info: Tom or Sherri, 631-567-9484.

Follow the Connetquot River from Lakeland County Park to Westbrook, passing through beautiful Connetquot Park Preserve; rain cancels; bring snack and liquid; meet at Westbrook Sports Complex (So. St. Pky. to Exit 45E; take Montauk Hwy. east a short distance, turn left just after crossing railroad bridge; from the east, take NY 27 to Connetquot Ave., go south to Montauk, turn left and proceed as above. Sat. June 16 – SARNOFF SPECIAL:

Meet at Patchogue LIRR station at 9AM for train to Montauk; we'll hike around Hither Hills and the bay; bring towel for swim, if warm enough; bring snacks and water; rain may cancel; no dogs, please.
 

Sun. June 17 –BELMONT LAKE RAMBLE:

 9:45 AM – 4 miles – moderate – flat – Info: Terrie 631-885-4543.

Primarily a singles hike, but all welcome; we’ll take a walk around the lake and then explore the hiking trail; bring water and snack/lunch; joint with NHOC; rain cancels; from Southern State Pky. Exit 38, follow signs into Belmont Lake State Park, meet left of entrance booth near comfort stations.
 

Sat. June 23 – SUMMER IN THE PINE BARRENS:

9:00 AM – 3 miles – easy – flat – Info: Office, 631-360-0753.

Enjoy the pristine, 4,000-acre Connetquot River State Park Preserve; likely to spot deer, osprey and trout; families encouraged; rain cancels; meet at main entrance to Connetqout Park (north side of NY 27, west of Oakdale-Bohemia Rd.; from the west, take Exit 47A, follow signs to u-turn for park; fee, or free with Empire Passport).
 

Fri. June 29 – TRAILS CENTER SPECIAL:

            9:00 AM – 4 miles – easy to moderate – flat – Info: Vinny, 631-209-0030.

Experienced, long-distance hikers only, please, for a traverse of our L.I. Trail for the benefit of New York Blood Center; hike begins at Field 7, Heckscher St. Pk.; hikers will receive ride back at the end; shorter hike meets at east end of Field 3, Sunken Meadow St. Pk. for a late-afternoon walk along the Nissequogue to Nissequogue River St. Pk. and back along the L.I. Sun. June 24 – BAYARD CUTTING ARBORETUM FREE CONCERT WALK:

11 AM – 3-4 miles – slow, easy – flat – Info: Quyen, (Quinn), 631-234-5486, AM of hike only.
Intended as a singles walk, but all welcome; take a leisurely walk around beautiful gardens, ponds and the Connetquot River in Bayard Cutting Arboretum, followed by a free outdoor concert in the shade of the majestic trees; optional 6 mile hike to Connetquot River Park Preserve or Great South Bay in Heckscher St. Pk. after concert; bring water, lunch and a chair; rain cancels; meet at Bayard Cutting Arboretum, So. St. Pky. Exit 45E, east on Montauk Hwy about ½ mile to entrance on right; parking fee, or free with Empire Passport; joint hike with AMC and NHOC; E: qwpham@yahoo.com
 

Wed. June 27 – NORTH END HIKE:

Get a weekday morning workout with a brisk hike on the very hilly north end of the Nassau-Suffolk Trail;  not for beginners; bring water; heavy rain cancels;  meet at Cold Spring Harbor State Park lot next to library on NY 25A, northeast of jct. NY 25A/108. 
 

Fri. June 29 – TRAILS CENTER SPECIAL:

            9:00 AM – 4 miles – easy to moderate – flat – Info: Vinny, 631-209-0030.

Sat. June 30 – NORTHWEST WOODS WALK:

A four-mile hike through Northwest Woods in East Hampton, including part of the Grace Estate; we will hike on some very old trails and some very new ones; bring water; meet on Hands Creek Road, near the intersection with Van Scoys Path West, about three miles north of East Hampton Village; park along roadside.
