December 2007 Hikes
To find the Greenbelt Office in Blydenburgh Park: from Route 25-25A in Smithtown, go south on Brooksite Dr.; at next light (New Mill Rd.), turn right to park entrance at end of road. From Route 347, find Brooksite Dr. between the 347-454 junction and Rt. 111; head north on Brooksite to New Mill Rd.; go left to the park. Follow the paved path at the west end of the lot to the Blydenburgh-Weld House.
IMPORTANT:
The first line of each
listing includes TIME, DISTANCE, PACE, and TERRAIN, in that
order. "Info" means no reservation is necessary; call only if you need more
information. "CALL" means you must call the leader to reserve a space on the
hike.

Each Greenbelt member, guest, or non-member participant agrees to accept personal responsibility for his or her safety and the safety of minors accompanying such persons. The Greenbelt cannot ensure the safety of any participant on hikes or activities. In participating in Greenbelt activities, each such person agrees to hold harmless and free from blame the activity leaders and the Greenbelt, its officers, directors, and members, for any accident, injury, or illness which might be sustained from participating in hikes or other Greenbelt activities.

1821 Blydenburgh-Weld House and the nearby mill complex, and enjoy the paths
along beautiful Stump Pond; tours run every Saturday; meet at the Greenbelt

Sun. Dec. 2 NISSEQUOGUE RIVER FAMILY FUN:

Hike from Nissequogue River State Park to Smithtown Landing, along the river and
through the woods; look for the vintage cars and sandwich rock; families
welcome; bring water and snack; meet at Nissequogue River State Park (Sunken
Meadow Pky. north to Exit SM4, head east on Pulaski Rd., which changes into Old
Dock Rd.; at the 4th traffic light, make a right onto St. Johnland
Rd.; park entrance is about ½ mile on the left side).

A flat walk into the Pine
Barrens on the Paumanok Path; not intended for beginners; rain or heavy snow
cancels; meet at Pine Trail Preserve lot, NY 25, 6/10 mile east of William Floyd
Pky., Ridge.

through Montauk's Hither Woods, the better to enjoy both the forest interior and
the rugged coast; bring lunch and liquid; meet at Montauk Recycling Center
trailhead, north side of NY 27, 2 miles east of Hither Hills Overlook, Montauk.

farewell to autumn and welcome to winter on this hike at the south end of the
L.I. Trail; meet at east end of Field 8, Heckscher St. Pk. (end of So. St. Pky.;

So. St. Pky., follow signs into Belmont Lake State Park; meet West side of
entrance booth near comfort stations.
Mon. Dec. 31 - NEW YEAR'S EVE WALK:

There's no better way to
end the year than with a leisurely stroll at the south end of the L.I. Trail;
bring flashlight; meet at Field 7, Heckscher St. Pk. (end of So. St. Pky.);
heavy rain or ice cancels.
Tues. Jan. 1 HITHER WOODS NEW YEARS HIKE:

At the end of a long weekend, enjoy the leader's annual New Year's Hike in Hither Woods; be prepared for a full day, as this hike will ramble though much of this magnificent Montauk forest; bring lunch and liquids; meet 10:00 A.M. (note the morning start time this year!) at Hither Hills Overlook, NY 27, Montauk; weather never cancels!
